What supplies does an acupuncture clinic need on every treatment?
Three things touch every patient without exception: a clean barrier on the plinth, clean hands, and a needle out of a sealed sterile pack that goes straight into a sharps container afterwards. Everything else on the list is conditional. Gloves follow the risk assessment. Lotion depends on whether you do adjunct soft tissue work, and tape on whether you dress a site.

Sterile acupuncture needles
Twenty variations of diameter and length in boxes of 100, all copper-handled with an individual guide tube. The copper wire loop makes the handle strong enough to reduce buckling while keeping the softness and flexibility that lets an experienced practitioner feel a patient's response and control the intensity of needling. Couch roll
Two-ply white rolls, 40m x 500mm, 18gsm, individually wrapped and perforated. The individual wrapping is the part that matters in a needling room, because it is there to prevent cross-contamination and it keeps the next roll clean on the shelf until you need it. The rolls are made from virgin paper rather than recycled, which is a deliberate choice about perforations tearing cleanly and the last few sheets on the tube still being usable.
A pack of 18 is £37.41 ex VAT, which is £2.08 a roll. Three packs or more brings that to £2.02, and five packs or more to £1.95 a roll. Nitrile examination gloves

Hypoallergenic massage lotion
Plenty of acupuncturists do soft tissue work either side of the needling, and the lotion is where sensitive skin usually complains. This one is paraben free, vegan, made in Europe, and independently tested with 100% of volunteers with sensitive skin reporting zero irritation. Medium glide, so it suits targeted work rather than long full-back sessions, and there is a pump on every bottle.

How much couch roll does one treatment use?
Work it back from the roll. Meglio rolls are 40m long. A treatment couch is around two metres, so if you tear a fresh two-metre length for each patient, one roll covers about twenty patients before it runs out. At £1.95 a roll that is 9.8p per patient. At the pallet price of £1.85 it is 9.3p.
Two adjustments are worth making to that number. Practitioners who cover only the head end or the chest of the couch will get closer to thirty or forty patients from a roll. Do acupuncturists need gloves?
Not for every insertion, and any blanket answer in either direction is wrong. Glove use follows a risk assessment. Where there is a realistic risk of contact with blood, body fluids or broken skin, gloves go on. Where there is not, clean hands are the control that matters.
The national infection prevention and control manual for England is clear on two points that catch clinics out. Gloves are single use and are changed immediately after each patient or on completing a task, so a pair worn from the waiting room to the plinth to the next patient is worse than no gloves at all.
