Ankle lock-off and support

The most common use. After the rigid stirrups and heel locks go on, a couple of EAB turns lock the strap off, add gentle compression and keep the whole thing from unravelling through a match. How to apply EAB tape

  4. Never fully circle a limb under tight stretch. Complete circumferential turns pulled tight are how you create a tourniquet effect. Angle your turns, ease the tension as you close a loop, and keep it even.
  5. Finish flat. Lay the last turn down without stretch so the end sits smoothly and is less likely to peel.
  6. Check circulation before they move. Press a nail bed and watch the colour return within a couple of seconds. Ask about numbness, pins and needles or throbbing. If anything is off, take it down and redo it looser.

Reach for rigid zinc oxide when the whole point is to block a movement, for example limiting inversion on a freshly protected ankle or holding a thumb still. Reach for EAB tape when you want support with give, compression, or a forgiving layer that moves with the athlete. In shorthand:

  • Need to compress? EAB. Rigid tape cannot squeeze evenly.
  • Need to lock off a rigid strap? EAB over the top.
  • Area swells or has to keep moving? EAB, because rigid tape gets uncomfortable fast.
  • Need a hard mechanical stop? Zinc oxide, with EAB only as the finishing layer.
  • Anchoring, sock tape or blister protection? Zinc oxide.
